After one 2-hour session, most beginners have a solid grasp of the basics and can get through a full game with support. Mastering the rules and strategy comes with ADDITIONAL lessons and Regular play — but the first session is always the most fun.

Our Austin instructors are experienced American Mahjong teachers who have guided hundreds of beginners and private groups across Austin.
Frankie
Austin, TX native and University of Kansas grad who teaches kindergarten. A college friend taught her to play one weekend, and she was hooked instantly. She loves watching it all click for people and bringing them together around her favorite game. Free time means reading, needlepointing, movies, and new restaurants.
Grace
Seattle, WA native and Santa Clara University grad in tech sales. Clara taught her to play, and she loves meeting new people and hearing what drew them to the game — there’s something special about a room full of people focused on tiles instead of phones. In her free time, she plays tennis and golf, bakes, and needlepoints.
Joyce
From College Station, TX, a Texas A&M grad who works as a recruiter at a big law firm. A college friend taught her how to play, and she loves getting to introduce something she loves to other people. Outside of mahjong, she’s hanging with friends, going on walks and runs, reading, and listening to Taylor Swift.

What is the best way to learn mahjong?
We recommend starting with a live lesson, so you learn the tiles, the card, and a full game together instead of piecing it together from videos. From there, Guided Open Play lets you practice with an instructor nearby, and Open Play lets you keep playing with a group. Our Austin classes and events are built around that path.
Can I teach myself mahjong?
You can pick up the basics on your own, but American Mahjong is harder to self-teach than it looks. The winning hands come from the National Mahjong League card, which changes every year, and table etiquette is easier to learn by playing. A single 2-hour lesson covers the tiles, how to read the card, and a full guided game.
